A Sense of Good Mothering

Most of the mothers I interviewed discussed that the mother’s exclusive role of child-rearing as a significant contributor to the high position mothers hold in Islam. Mothers with high levels of cultural capital, and who are closely involved in supporting their children’s schooling in a way that they feel to be effective, experience a sense of emotional reinforcement and moral fulfilment that is framed by Quranic verses, Prophetic Hadith and historical stories. Aseel stated:

I don’t leave my children until I make sure that they understand everything in whatever activity they do in any subject.… Prophet Muhammad did not say: ‘Heaven is under the feet of mothers’ [Prophetic Hadith] for nothing. We should fulfil our duty to deserve heaven to be under our feet.
